Advertisement Ideas: How To Make Current Events Pay Off!!!

Barbara Walters stepped away from TV today after a 50 year career. She leaves a legacy of excellence and insight in the industry. As she was saying goodbye on The View I put on my business and marketing hat and thought how many businesses will capitalize on this current event and how many others will lose out on an opportunity.

Think about it whatever industry you are in you can capitalize on the fact that Barbara Walters is retiring. If you are creative you will drive business to you. Here are some ideas:

1:You have a restaurant or club you can host a Barbara Walters look a like contest and give out prizes. You could promote this in all your marketing material.

2: You have a brick and mortar business and you can host a chance drawing for Barbara Walters memorabilia.

3: You can do a Tribute to Barbara Walters and offer a special promotion like buy one item get the next item 50% off. If you are a life coach, personal trainer, or other service type business you could run a program in honor of Barbara Walters 1st session $50.

Do these pages look familiar? They should as they are the news pages for AOL and MSN. The key is to read these pages and come up with advertising campaigns that are related to what is happening fro example you own a music distribution business and you read about Beyoncé’s and Jay Z’s run in with Solange and you run an ad Are You Looking For Love in An Elevator? and then offer a discount on all Jay Z , Beyoncé, and Aerosmith Music. The idea is to take what is going on in today’s news and capitalize on it so it can build a buzz about your business and thus entice people to do business with you.

Look for special events like these happening in your community and seek ways to be involved. The idea is that you can be involved and gain major exposure for your business as these events attract people who could benefit from your product or service. Think about it you attend an event you have a booth, you have a chance drawing, you secure names and email addresses. After the event you send an email to all that signed up for the drawing with a special offer to either use your services or purchase your product. In being aware of what is happening you are able to design an effective marketing strategy  that will help you gain brand recognition while also increasing your revenue.

It was late November 2010 when I approached Skyline Chili in Sunrise, FL about Doing a fundraising night for The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Sunrise, FL. The proprietor agreed and not only did we have 1 night we had 7 nights and as a result raised over $5,000. The benefit to the business was positive exposure in the marketplace as they were featured in The Sunrise Forum, received publicity on Get Motivated With Jonathan JDOGG Lederman, which is heard on www.blogtalkradio.com/hrafnstongradio on Monday at 6:00 PM EDT, inclusion on The Event Tee-Shirts, inclusion on the event posters, and an opportunity to present the check at Relay For Life. As a result they picked up new customers as I had never eaten at Skyline Chili before and now I am there at least once a month and I continue to promote Skyline Chili.

If you dial this number you will find they are no longer in business. I can only surmise as to why. I had one encounter with them about 3 years ago as I approached them for help with a community event that I am involved with and was told immediately that they were not interested. I found this odd because as a marketing specialist I know the more people who know about me the more business I have a chance to obtain and the more revenue I have a chance to secure.  I asked the GM if they could donate $10 pizza’s and was told I was asking for $200 worth of product and was told no. I then stated you sell the pizza for $19.99 you cost is probably $5.00. I was then asked how the hell would you know? To which I answered  I did my homework. He was adamant that he was not interested. Today he is out of business.

Wouldn’t have made sense for the pizza place to donate 10 pizzas and get the promotion that would have been provided. Do the math if he donates 10 pizza pies and it costs $50 and he picks up 4 regular customers who spend $25 monthly that is $1200 in revenue – costs which is a profit od about $500 for the year. If someone asked you to invest $50 to make $500 would you?

Advertisement Ideas: What Opportunities Are You Missing?

So many times I hear the term I am not interested and I think how many opportunities are you missing out with this mindset. The idea is to be aware of what is happening in the community and how you can get involved so as to benefit from current and special events.  The other night I watching TNT and Barkley didn’t know what a Perogi was and guess what a local Polish restaurant heard the broadcast and arranged to deliver perogies and other Polish Food. The restaurant was mentioned to over 1,000,000 viewers. By being aware this restaurant increased it recognition and sales for the week. So the key is to be interested and to be engaged so that you can take advantage of opportunities. Ask yourself what opportunities am I missing.

By being aware of current events and special events I have personally raised $1619 so far for The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of West Boca Raton, FL. I have done this by being aware of posts on Facebook and commenting and sharing the link http://main.acsevents.org/goto/jdogg1. I have attended special events and collected donations. I have stopped off at shopping plazas and went store to store collecting. I share this with you to encourage you to seek opportunities and to make current and special events work for you. Stay Positive!!!
