Charitable Giving Up Slightly But Still Ailing Years ago I initiated a fundraising campaign, Brother Can You Spare a Dime, the idea was to ask everyone I came in contact with for a dime that would be used to take underprivileged children on a holiday shopping spree. As I introduced the program I made up donation jars with that slogan and placed them in many businesses. Every business that participated in the program was recognized in all the marketing materials for The Spreading The Joy Program run by The Coral Springs Jaycees, which provided a holiday shopping spree to underprivileged children.  The donation jars were one part of the fundraising process we also solicited businesses to sponsor children and they received much publicity. The Jaycees also set up collection days in front of high trafficked retail stores publicizing those stores. As a result of businesses supporting this effort the businesses received publicity which put them on top of the consumers mind.

When you include your charitable giving in your advertising you show that you care about the community you increase the chance to procure new customers and retain existing customers as people like to do business with those they perceive to be giving back to the community.  In every business where I have had a management position or was the owner I always stressed the importance of charitable giving and how to leverage it to build a brand and increase cash flow. As a result I always saw an increase in business after I publicized my community involvement.

Advertisement Ideas: Going Old School!!!

Today’s entry was inspired by the happenings of this afternoon as I went back to the old school of doing things and took my message to the streets visiting local businesses as I collected for The 2014 American Cancer Society Relay For Life. I decided instead of waiting while my oil was being changed in my car that I would walk the corporate park and visit local businesses. I ignored the no soliciting signs that were posted on the business as I think anyone who is not receptive to soliciting is missing out on opportunities because you never know who is walking into your business. In my case I represent many opportunities for business people to build their brand and giving me the opportunity to speak to them is very advantageous. The businesses do not know me and do not know what I can do for them so after I asked for donations I gave them my business card and told about The Internet TV, The Anything Bucket, which airs on www.wrpbitv.com on Wednesday at 8:00 PM and invited them to be a guest. The gentleman who said he wasn’t interested the minute I walked in the door lost out on a great opportunity. The gentleman that asked me if the money goes to where I say it goes reached into his pocket and donated $20 when I shared my story and he is going to call me to be on my TV show. When you go old school and do things person to person you get better results as you begin to build a relationship and thus create more opportunities.  It isn’t about selling the person it is about sharing information and having the person who you speak with share with the people he or she knows.  One company I stopped into had a receptionist that seemed to be put off when I came in and when she said I have some guy collecting donations, I said I am not just some guy I am Jonathan JDOGG Lederman and I am well-connected in the community. When her office manager came out she  was very cordial and listened to what I said and stated they already do Relay for Life but she could find $1 to support me. I left her my card and she thanked me for coming in. Continue reading Advertisement Ideas: Going Old School!!!

By now everyone knows of the scandal that rocked The Penn State Football Program. This morning the news conference announcing the sanctions was held and it created a buzz around the nation. The NCAA slammed Penn Statefor the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal Monday with an unprecedented series of penalties, including a $60 million fine and the loss of all the school’s victories from 1998-2011, knocking Joe Paterno from his spot as major college football’s winningest coach.Other sanctions include a four-year ban on postseason games that will prevent Penn State from playing for the Big Ten title, the loss of 20 scholarships per year over four years and five years’ probation. The NCAA also said that any current or incoming football players are free to immediately transfer and compete at another school.

You may be asking yourself what does this have to do with me as a business owner? The answer probably not that much unless you have ties to Penn State or sell Penn State Merchandise, however it has a lot to do with you as it gives you chance to take a stand and increase your presence in your community by doing something that promotes helping children’s charities. Imagine if you placed a note in your advertising that stated in the wake of The Penn State Sex Scandal like many business people I have been alerted to the growing problem of child abuse in our country and will be donating 10% of all my sales or bookings to The Missing and Exploited Children’s Fund. Their website is www.missingkids.com.
